Martuni District (NKAO)
Martuni District was one of the five districts (raions) of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (AzSSR).〔(Управление делами Президента Азербайджанской Республики. Административно-территориальное деление. )〕 In 1991 the parliament of Azerbaijan abolished Martuni District, incorporating its territory into the neighbouring Azerbaijani Khojavend District.〔(Большая Советская Энциклопедия. Нагорно-Карабахская автономная область )〕
The unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic has defined its Martuni Province as being the former Martuni District, plus some surrounding land captured during the Nagorno-Karabakh War from Azerbaijan. The eastern part of Martuni Rayon remains in Azerbaijani control.
